Some of you may have already seen or heard of the following topic, none the less I thought it was a bit of a fun topic to throw around anyways. Meet Wendy, she is a whippet. Whippets are primarily known for looking more like a shorter greyhound, they are also used for racing, hunting, and show. Inthe last few years, a handful of these pictures have been generated showing the above. With these pictures has come explanations as to what is going on with these dogs. Turns out that they have a genetic mutation, "Like humans, dogs have two copies of every gene — one inherited from their mother and the other from their father. Whippets with one mutated copy of the myostatin (MTSN) gene and one normal copy to be more muscled than normal and to account for a large share of the breed’s fastest racers. However, whippets with two mutated copies of the MTSN gene have a gross excess of muscle and are rarely found among competitive racers". Scientists are trying to link athletic performance to a mutation in the myostatin gene in search for competitive implications for humans. Instead of your usual performance enhancing drugs that are often traceable, some are fearing that the now termed "gene doping" will be a regular occurance in competitive sports. The bigger faster stronger steroid days are numbered! Who knows, our last olympics, this years NFL, any competitive sport where large amount of dollars is invested into it for the purpose of entertainment, this could be occuring.
